Parent and Family Volunteer Opportunities

Dear Seward Montessori Parents and Families,

Volunteers make the difference between a good school and a great school. The time you dedicate matters very much – whether you can commit a little time or a great deal of time, on school premises or in your home – it counts!

Below is information on the various opportunities we anticipate.  Volunteer opportunities will be announced throughout the school year. Be sure to stay in touch with what’s going on at Seward!

Volunteer for as many, or as few, things as you would like!  Thank you for the best gift you can give Seward Montessori, your valuable time.

Volunteer Opportunities Throughout the School Year

      Lunch and Recess – Assisting students in the lunchroom including helping them to learn about composting and recycling.  Play with them afterwards on the playground.

      Classroom Volunteer - Assist in a classroom as requested by the teacher.  Opportunities may include: coordinating Scholastic book orders, organizing snacks, compiling Friday folders, making copies, organizing classroom community-building events, helping with classroom materials.

      Room Parent Work with the classroom teacher to facilitate parent involvement. Responsibilities may include: Developing class list, forwarding emails from PTA/teacher etc, forming relationship with teacher to help with needs they may have, welcoming new families in the class, assisting with parties and gatherings both inside and outside of the classroom. This is a great job for working parents!

      Seward PTA – Be a part of Seward Montessori PTA, a parent-run organization that works to strengthen and support the education and community of Seward Montessori.  Each year the Seward PTA works to raise $40,000 to help support our students, teachers, staff and administration. The money we raise funds field trips, classroom and media supplies, after school activities, teacher and student grants and much more. PTA updates and volunteer opportunities presented at the monthly Seward Montessori Round Table.  www.sewardmontessori.org

      SMSC – Be a part of the Seward Montessori Site Council. Through effective and inclusive communication and decision-making, the SMSC acts to establish strategic planning, resource allocation, site-specific policies and processes designed to support the achievement of Seward students. SMSC is open to any parent or community member who wants to work to improve the educations experience at Seward. SMSC meets during the monthly Seward Montessori Round Table.

      Seward Montessori Round Table-a monthly gathering to update parents, share information, and invite interaction with the Seward Montessori PTA and Seward Montessori Site Council. Meetings start at 5:30. Childcare is provided.

      Trash for Cash-Help with collection of Box Tops for Education, energy bar wrappers, dental care items and packaging, personal care packaging, drink pouches, food pouches, and Campbell’s labels. All items are collected and submitted to be recycled. Funds raised go into the PTA treasury.

      Photographers – Take pictures for the school’s website, classroom web pages and the newsletter.

      Splash monthly newsletter –  Help with the layout. Gather stories. Volunteer from home and keep this communication line open!                                              

      Donating baked goods for various events – Donate food throughout the year during conferences, staff appreciation and special events.

      Fundraising Committee: The Fundraising Co-Chairs and this committee plan and conduct PTA-sponsored fundraisers for Seward Montessori for the purpose of providing funds for programs, projects and materials that enhance education for all students. This committee includes coordinators of each of the fundraisers and others who are interested in decision-making around fundraising.

      Special Events Committee: Led by the Special Event Co-Chairs, this committee plans and conducts several special events for the purpose of strengthening family involvement at Seward. These include the Fall Potluck, the Spring Festival, and the Staff Appreciation Luncheon

      Middle School Parent Group: The Seward Middle School Parent Group includes parents, teachers, and administration. Our goal is to positively impact the Seward Middle School Community by providing deeper conversations between staff & parents, and generate new ideas to meet needs.

      Budget and Grant Review Committee: Chaired by the Treasurer, this committee creates the PTA budget that is approved by PTA members each Fall. This committee works with Fundraising to estimate expected income, and estimates funds available for disbursement through the Grants Review Process. This group reviews Grant requests, the Principal is consulted as needed, and funding recommendations are made to the PTA Board for final approval.

      Communication Committee: This committee is responsible for promoting effective communications among Seward families regarding school events, activities, meetings, policies, news, student recognition, volunteer recognition, etc. Communication channels include the Splash newsletter, online Seward Updates, Room Parents, the school and PTA’s websites, and social media like Facebook and Twitter. 


Volunteer Opportunities Once a Year


      Fall Family Potluck Picnic – Help at the first gathering of Seward families in September.

      Kindergarten Drop Off- Welcome new parents to Seward as they drop off their kinders for the first day.

      Picture Days –Prepare children for their school photographs (one date in the Fall and Spring).

      Seward Great Gathering-Help plan our Great Gathering at Midtown Global Market.

      Read Around – This fundraiser encourages all students to read in January/ February.

      Book Fair – Help set-up this fun event where we recycle our used books, videos, music, etc.

      E2 Dance – Help plan for this event for 4th and 5th grade families. March, 2016

      Middle School Dance – Help organize this social event for the Middle School.

      Courtyard – Help maintain the school’s courtyard: weeding, planting, laying mulch, etc in the Spring.

      Plant Sale – The Spring Plant Sale volunteers are involved with sorting and labeling plants for pickup by the buyers. Volunteers may also help to bring loads of plants to cars.

      Kindergarten Registration – Welcome incoming kindergartners in May.

      Spring Event – Assist with planning and carrying-out our school’s biggest social event in May.

      Staff Appreciation Luncheon – Coordinate the end-of-the-year luncheon for our fabulous staff.   .

      History Day – Volunteers will be trained to help with Middle School’s History Day.

      8th Grade Graduation – Help the graduation run smoothly.
